Pictures for Palestinians
The 'Pictures for Palestinians' collection grew from watching, listening, and feeling the weight of the news in the last two years. The paintings are gestures of solidarity made with the belief that art can bear witness, and raise money, to support those working to help Palestinians.

Gaza Coast series

Gaza Land and Sea
In 2025 the Jordanese airforce dropped aid into Gaza in a largely fruitless attempt to alleviate the starvation. Photos taken from the air inspired me to paint this. One of the things I I wanted to show was the contrast between the deep blue slightly undulating sea and the rusty coloured land littered with destroyed buildings. I have referenced the struggles of the Palestinian people with small ink drawings.

Gaza Coast and Tents
From high in the air the Gaza coast can be stunning – the deep blues and greens of the sea contrasting with the deep yellow of the land. A bit closer we can see the grays of destroyed buildings and their dark shadows. We know of the resilience of many Palestinians – not crushed by the destruction and we know of the precariousness of the delivery of shockingly small amounts of aid. I painted this picture to reflect all this with the bold colours, scratchy grey rubble and tiny ink sketches of Palestinians. As for the aid I have suspended white tents in the air – it may or may not arrive – or those flying objects might be drones.

Gaza Coast
Photos taken from Jordanese planes dropping aid into Gaza in 2025 were my starting point for this picture. While painting I wanted to show the powerful contrast between the calm deep blues and greens of the sea and the sandy coloured land scattered with buildings destroyed by Israeli bombs. I also reference urban buildings as they may have been if left standing.

Even months after the October 2023 Israeli assault on Gaza I had no words that seemed adequate to express the horror of what was happening. The painting expressed my raw response. Partly submerged in the painting are small collages among which are Israeli soldiers confronted by Palestinian women and ink drawings of Palestinians going about their daily lives.

In 2024 90% of the Gazan population of 2.1 million people were displaced from their homes. Many were displaced more than once. According to the Costs of War Project at Brown University the US spent $17.9 billion on military aid to Israel in the year from October 2023.That’s why the Statue of Liberty and Joe Biden are cowering in the corner of the picture under the tents and rubble.

This was just the second oil pastel I drew in response to the genocide in Gaza. I saw so many images of destruction – rubble, bits of buildings, cracks in buildings, distraught people and few of people just trying to cope. So I wanted to make an image of someone clearing up a focus of this piece.

“What we are witnessing in Lebanon is the unmistakable extension of the Israeli military playbook used in Gaza - collective punishment, forced displacement, and the deliberate terrorising of civilian populations, including already traumatised Palestinian communities."
CEO of MAP on March 6 2026
The Collage for Gaza Series
I started working on these collages as tearing printed images of Gaza seemed an apt way to reflect how Gaza itself was being torn apart.

Collage for Gaza 1
I tore up prints of oil pastels and collages I had made as I wanted to show the ragged edges. The images I was seeing from Gaza at the time were ragged and wretched and I wanted to reflect that. Tucked under the columns of destruction are small images of Israeli tanks and Palestinians fighting back

Collage for Gaza 2
The genocide makes me really angry ….,so tearing up images of it felt the right thing to do. I don’t think the ripping was altogether futile as the shorn and ragged images reflect the destruction. Piecing the shreds together could have signified reconstruction but sadly, no, not yet. It signifies chaos and shows glimpses of Palestinians struggling to survive. Picture above shows how it might look in a frame but the frame is not included.

"MAP's Lebanon team have activated emergency response plans. This includes supporting UN displacement shelters with mental health provision and preparing to release pre-positioned stocks of blankets, hygiene kits, and other essential supplies for affected families. The first collective shelter for Palestinian refugees has opened in Nahr el Bared camp to host displaced families who fled the camps in Beirut.”.

Collage for Gaza 4
In 2025 Palestinians were left with little option but to risk their lives to collect low nutrient food from the so-called Gaza Humanitarian Food Foundation’s deadly sites. which had usurped serious UN food distribution. 2000 were killed doing so. Palestinians were also forced to migrate from exclusion zones. I’ve used news photos from Gaza as snapshots of the reality together with copies of my original pictures of food queues to make this collage. I’ve torn the images – to reflect the chaos and also my anger.

"It has great colours and at the same time draws you in to look at the detail. A powerful fractured visit to a forlorn and wracked land"
Ian Wood, Owner of "Collage for Gaza 7"

Resilience Series
I have started working on the Resilience series in the hope of reflecting, at least to some small extent, the resilience of the Palestinian people. One way I’m trying to do this is by painting tiny images of people staying strong in the midst of the vast forces enveloping them . Another way is simply by the strength of the colours and the interaction of the shapes in the pictures.

Resilience - Red 1
I wanted in this picture to convey the strength and power of so many Palestinians at this time, by combining red and yellow and sweeping brush strokes. Precariously balance on the curve of two of the strokes are tiny images of people, one defiant and one escaping.

Resilience - Yellow 1
Abstracting the impressions I have from the media of life in Gaza at the moment led me to the primary colours blue and yellow. Blue and yellow contrast with each other as colours. The emotions they symbolise, blue can represent pain and yellow can represent the present and even some hope, are contrasting. There is a tension in the picture which may draw you in to the tiny images of people getting on with survival

“ As violence escalates across the Middle East, Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP) urgently calls for the reopening of all crossings into Gaza, the unrestricted entry of vital humanitarian aid, and the end of movement restrictions on Palestinians in the occupied West Bank.
"Following the US and Israel's military attacks on Iran, and Iran's subsequent retaliatory attacks, Israeli authorities closed every crossing into Gaza to aid deliveries. Karem Abu Salem crossing was partially reopened today, but the Rafah crossing and others remain closed indefinitely. Large scale aid delivery into Gaza has been blocked, and entry and exit for humanitarian staff and medical evacuations has been suspended.
"Movement restrictions have also been imposed in the West Bank. These actions are placing Palestinian lives at risk and severely obstructing the ability of medical teams to operate.”
